How Does Screen Time Affect Your Eye Health
In today’s digital age, Charleston residents spend more time than ever staring at screens for both business and pleasure. From smartphones to computers and televisions, our eyes are constantly exposed to the blue light emitted by these devices. But while screen time has become an integral part of our lives, our Crescent Eye Care team knows how important it is to consider how blue light affects our eye health. Learn more about this phenomenon down below and schedule an eye vision appointment with us today!

Constant Blue Light Exposure
The blue light emitted by our phones and computer screens can lead to digital eye strain, which is commonly associated with dry eyes, blurry vision, headaches, and neck and shoulder pain. Prolonged screen time can cause our eyes to work harder than necessary, which can in turn lead to fatigue and discomfort.

Possible Increase of Nearsightedness
In addition to digital eye strain, excessive screen time can also increase the risk of myopia, or nearsightedness. While this trend is still being studied, excessive screen time is believed to increase one’s risk of nearsightedness by up to eighty percent.

Disrupted Sleep Patterns
Another way in which screen time affects our eye health is by disrupting our sleep patterns, which can in turn affect our eyes. Screen-emitted blue light can suppress the production of melatonin, better known as a hormone the body uses to regulate sleep. This can lead to difficulty falling asleep, poor sleep quality, and daytime fatigue.

How to Protect Your Eyes
So, what can we do to protect our eye health in the age of screens? One approach is to follow what is known as the 20-20-20 rule: taking a 20-second break every 20 minutes or so to look at something 20 feet away from you. This can help reduce eye strain and give your eyes a chance to rest. Other tips include reducing screen brightness, increasing the font size, and adjusting the screen’s position to reduce glare.
While screen time has become an integral part of our lives, it’s important to consider how it affects our eye health. Scheduling regular eye vision appointments with Crescent Eye Care is the best way to make sure your eyes remain healthy amid the blue light we encounter at school, home, and work.
