Your eyes are one of the most important parts of your body that you need to maintain, yet they are often ones that we neglect until issues start occurring with them. If you are like us and you are thinking about them constantly though, you might be wondering all the ways in which you could potentially protect them from damage. One of the ways that you could is by eating food that helps protect your eyes on a consistent basis. Here are five foods that can promote healthy eyes.

Fish

While fish isn’t everyone’s favorite, they actually can provide quite a few health benefits that many people don’t know about. This comes from the high amount of Omega-3 fatty acids. This is the main nutrient that comes from fish and is part of the reason why fish oil is heralded as one of the must-have supplements for any diet. The Omega-3 fatty acids that are contained within the fish promotes the reversal of dry eye that some of us can experience from time to time. Taking some supplements or eating fish can help especially if you work at a computer all day because that can cause dry eye.

Citrus Fruits

Citrus fruits like oranges and grapefruits have a large amount of vitamin C in them, which helps prevent many age-related eye issues. It helps the body maintain and form connective tissue within your eyes which helps prevent macular degeneration as you age. So next time you are looking for a dessert, reach for citrus rather than ice cream. Your eyes will thank you for it.

Carrots

Carrots are extremely rich in both vitamin A and beta carotene. Beta carotene is what gives the carrots its orange coloring, and it is what allows your body to create and break down vitamin A into a supplement that your body gains benefits from. Vitamin A helps create rhodopsin, which is a component of what allows your retinas to absorb light in a beneficial way. Vitamin A also promotes your eyes creating moisture so that you won’t get dry eye.

Beef

Beef is known to have a large quantity of zinc in it, which has been shown to promote healthy eyes and prevent age-related eye issues that could occur. The eye itself contains a large amount of zinc. Impaired vision, cloudy cataracts, and poor night sight have all been linked to the lack of zinc within one’s body.

Eggs

Eggs contain a high amount of zeaxanthin, which has been found to protect your eyes against harmful UV rays that could cause damage to your eyes. Of course, eating eggs will not help as much as sunglasses do, but they can still help nonetheless. It has also been shown to contain large amounts of zinc and vitamin C.
